Mixed Media Ballerina on Canvas

Hello Creatives! If you follow me on social media you know I have been working on this mixed media ballerina!  I have been working on her all week and I am super excited to her with you! This work is for my baby girl, I am not sure she is finished yet, there is something more I may want to add but I am not sure yet… Either way there are so many very cool techniques in this project that I just couldn’t wait to share them with you!   Continue reading

How changing color can completely change your art

Princess in Progress white color Rita Barakat
Hello color creatives! Well things are getting crazy around here!  I am creating like crazy, teaching classes and getting ready to head to MI  to demo for a convention! Should be fun times! Meanwhile I have been doing some fun live videos on Periscope – have you been watching? I am trying to figure out an easy way to transfer those videos to Youtube... but I digress…

Here are some pics from yesterday periscope. This one is before I added color to her hair  – notice the feel of the piece. I find it interesting that changing even one color can  change your perspective and the feel of a apiece. I think I will do this again and leave her hair white, I like it.  Here is  a close up of the background…

Yellow and fushia color Rita Barakat
These are the textures before I did a final layer of Gesso to soften the look, notice the different feel when I change the color…

Pink color Princess Rita Barakat art journal
Totally different look with Gesso and pink hair color right? night and day! I loved both outcomes, even though they are so different! The pink and pastel yellow color  background seems to make it more warm, magical, ethereal, fairytale-ish.  The white color against the bold background feels like winter, more modern, easy to imagine in a children’s book. Amazing the power of color!

Pink color Princess Rita Barakat
Here is a close up of her face, isn’t it interesting how color can completely change the feel and look of the same painting? Here she is again on an art journal page…

Yellow color Princess Rita Barakat art Journal
On this page she has a different background and fluorescent yellow hair color. Same girl different feel. And depending on who you are and what you like you will favor a different  girl. I actually drew her here first in my art journal. Most of the time this is where I start, making sketches in my art journal or sketchbook. I don’t always color all of my sketches but as soon as I finished I knew she would be the perfect subject for the commissioned piece, ent on to do that and then came back to paint this one.

Yellow color Princess Rita Barakat
What is very interesting here is that her hair is actually fluorescent – it doesn’t show in the photos but it is amazing bright fluorescent yellow in person and on a video. I really like all three versions. Here you can see again how changing colors makes such a dramatic difference in the feel of a piece. It makes me want to be more proficient in photoshop! LOL   It also makes me think about how we choose color – sometimes it’s good to experiment!

I think you will be seeing this girl again- any name suggestions for these girls? Please leave me a comment!

My First Fairy Stencil!

1-Untitled-1
Hey hey creative peeps I am super excited! This is the news I have been dying to share!
What you are looking at is my  First Fairy Stencil!!!!
This summer has been crazy busy with kids, teaching, building my brand and creating so this release has been a long time coming! This is a test run, a limited edition – I only have a limited amount made and when they are gone they are gone! I made several examples with it so that you could get an idea of how versatile they are! It is a 12×12 heavy weight stencil made by The Crafters Workshop (so you know this is a good strong solid stencil).  There are two girl faces and two wings meant to use separately or layered together.  You can use this as a template and draw in your lines first with a fine tip permanent pen (the PITT Artist small tip pen fits), mechanical pencil or use a variety of mediums with the stencil, limited only to your imagination!

3-Aug 2015 041-001    5-Aug 2015 043-003
You can use the girls separately or with the wings. You can place the wings, or part of the wings anywhere you wish. Here are two samples of the same girl, different coloring to render different feelings (of course when I do my girls they always have fantasy colored hair! But you can see that these girls could be any color and by adding your own accents you can change her up a bit, making my First Fairy Stencil a very versatile stencil. (Blue hair girl has Whipped Spackle for hair and colored with  Twinkling H20’s, her face is colored with Gelatos®  and PITT® Artist Pens. Purple Hair girl was colored with PITT® Artist Pens, PITT® Pastel Pencils and wings have chalk paint.)

1-Aug 2015 045     2-Aug 2015 042-002
Here (Aqua hair) I used the new fairy stencil to draw my picture in pencil. I painted outside the lines to give her a little fuller face which makes her look a little younger. I used the same girl  on the other girl (green hair), extended her hair (gave her extensions lol), added accents and because this girl on my First Fairy Stencil has fuller lips I was able to leave the center white (teeth) for a different look. (Aqua hair girls  hair was colored with Gelatos®, her face PITT® Artist Pens & PITT® Pastel Pencils, and her wings- Texture Luxe™. Green haired girl face and lips Gelatos® & PITT® Artist Pens, hair & wings are colored with Twinkling H20’s and PITT® Artist Pens.)

4-Aug 2015 040-001
Here is a look at the  entire First Fairy Stencil. If your are super excited like me, you are thinking how can I by this exclusive stencil? I am putting it in my Etsy shop for one week! That’s all – I only have a limited number and I am going to Tulsa next weekend to teach at CKC and I will take them with me to sell at the show in the From Cover 2 Cover booth. If you have ever been to one of these shows you know how crazy busy they are and the shopping madness that goes on! I am hoping to sell out! (side-note if you haven’t signed up for one of my classes and will be in Tulsa or Houston check out my classes page – some of my classes only have 3 spots left! Click on the class tab above to check it out! ) If you will be at one of these shows, or are local, want to buy a stencil before they sell out and do not want to pay shipping & handling email me at rbarakat@ritabarakat.com and I can make a special arrangement for you. The First Fairy Stencil is $7.99 plus S&H. I brought the sample with me to the Detroit show and everyone wanted to buy it so I know I will sell out quick! If for some reason they don’t I will sell the remaining stencils at the Houston show.

I am hoping this will be the first of more stencils (maybe stamps) to come, I have already been asked to do more girls with different hairstyles, ethnicity and expressions – I have been doing a lot of drawing and have lots of ideas! I hope you like it – I would love your feedback and ideas! (Unfortunately the size 12×12 prohibits me from shipping outside of the US at this time.)

Blessings!

CHA Paper Arts Blog Hop today!

may 2015 017-001

Good morning artsy peeps! I am super excited to share this sweet project I made for todays CHA Paper Arts Blog Hop! All week long several  CHA Designers will be working with different CHA Manufacturers to bring you lots of fun projects and tutorials! Oh and did I mention prizes? But I digress…
I was thrilled to find out I would be working with Bo Bunny! As soon as I saw these beautiful Juliet papers I was inspired to make this mixed media little girl. She stand almost 18 inches and is covered in the various paper designs from the Juliet Collection by BoBunny!

To make this project I drew my girl, traced it onto various patterned papers and foam core board, cut them out and glued the pieces back together! Here are some details;

may 2015 019-001

To create her skin and hair I used gesso and various Gelatos® Colors to paint her features on the polka dot paper collection from BoBunny. The sweet flower in her hair is also BoBunny! Easily attached with a little Gel Medium.

may 2015 020-001

Of course I added this little bunny in honor of the Bo Bunny name! Tip*to make pieces pop, make sure you ink the edges! Did you notice the little pocket? I added a little pearl flourish! (Also Bo Bunny).

may 2015 015-001
Did you notice her sparkly ruby red shoes? The paper is from a Juliet 6×6 paper pad – same paper as her dress just a little smaller. Then I topped it of with a little Bo Bunny glitter paste – the color is blush and although it’s pink it really shines on top of red!

may 2015 021-001
And last but not least I made her sweet little slip with a few Bo Bunny doilies cut in half! I hope you enjoyed my project today!

Sometimes the most wonderful ideas come from you – blog readers – one of you suggested a steampunk girl, so I drew her – she needs a name any suggestions? I did a little search  before starting my mixed media piece and saw the most outrageous and fun (and crazy) fashions! It also happens that Faber-Castell Design Memory Craft® has a Gelatos®Colors set called Steampunk so I used only those colors for this project. There will be a post about this project on the  Faber-Castell Design Memory Craft® blog either today or tommorrow – not sure when it’s going up but watch for it on their blog.

March 2015 237100-001
Here is another peek, not my usual color palette  but I love how the colors came out! Speaking of color…

First Official Post!!! mixed media art

©Rita Barakat, All Rights Reserved  Hey hey there bloggers!
Well if you are reading this you have officially made it to my new site!  Yay! My First  Official Post!  I had to make the move to incorporate all  the new changes going on  with my work! Years ago when I started  blogging it was all about scrap booking and  although you will still  occasionally see some scrap booking  on this blog you will see a  lot  more mixture of art & mixed media projects.

If you have been following my blog you know my work has evolved, I love  a challenge  and when I challenged myself to do faces I fell in love with  drawing girls! Sharing all  my art has led me to try my hand at  licensing!  Here are a couple of  samples I made  up for my portfolio.

© Rita Barakat, All Rights Reserved  Here is another picture – showing the back of the handbag I made!  This collection is  called the Fashion Gals and it also comes in lime  green. Originally done on canvas this mixed media piece was altered digitally to make this tiny little tin pail  and (below) some round containers, you can never have too many containers for all  your treasures!

I think it might be ironic that I picked that quote, this website has been rough!  If you  know me on my blog you know that I am not a computer person and I have  been  working  very hard for weeks on my portfolio and designing this new site. The  last  thing I had to to do was move my old blog over and I did it! But then I did  something  wrong and with one small stupid code it was all gone…the new website,  five years  posts from my old blog GONE! I had no access to my dashboard, I was in a  panic!  What  a  mess!

©Rita Barakat, All Rights Reserved

Luckily my server was able to recover from Sun- unfortunately I had been working  like crazy Sun- Tues as my goal was to have it finished by Thursday so there was a lot  of work that was lost!  I am thankful I had almost everything backed up so it was  just a  matter of doing it all again. (I lost two days! Uggh I could easily go a week without  looking at a  computer right about now!) But at least it is all done, I learned a lot and I  am proud that I did the whole site by myself! (Just don’t ask me how I did anything!  LOL!) So I hope you enjoyed my first official post and you like the new site~ take a  look around. If you see anything that you think is missing and I should have let me know in the comments. I hope you also take a look at my portfolio – if you are familiar with my blog I am sure will recognize some of the work, some is new. Thanks for joining me in my new mixed media art venture! I hope you have a wonderful weekend!
