Mixed media on walls? Yes!

Mixed media on Walls Rita Barakat
TGIF peeps! Mixed media on walls? Yes! If you saw my live periscope a couple of weeks ago you saw me using stencils (DCWV) and Texture Paste (White Crackle Media and Texture Fierro – Deco Art ) on my walls! Just like we use mixed media techniques on paper and canvas I wanted to add texture on my accent wall! It was a fun and easy project – you can do this!  This is the end result! Someone had a question about repainting and what would I do, it is a raised surface so you would have to sand it down a bit before repainting. I am always doing all kinds of techniques around the house this one was quite simple which is what I wanted in this room. I needed it to be calm and  serene, a place to relax.

Mixed media on Walls Rita Barakat
Here you can see the new floors and the plain walls before the furniture came back in. When we moved into our house the living room and dining room had hardwood floors and we always felt like the front room (office) and master bedroom connected to it should have been hardwoods; unfortunately that was already decided  before we bought the house. With our anniversary coming up we wanted to do something for us. Every house we ever bought we decorated the living areas first, then the kids bedrooms and our room never seemed to make it on the to do list!) It’s going to be our 25th anniversary (yes I was a child bride lol!) and since we have special needs kids we can’t exactly go on a trip or anything; so we have decided to do a room makeover. We got new floors, I painted the walls, got a new bed and chairs for the room!  The floors alone alone make it look so much bigger!

Mixed media on Walls Rita Barakat
Here is the wall with the bed, my little nightstand will actually go in between the chairs as it is too short for the high bed!  I had to get a new bedspread to match the new walls and bed! I  found this one at Target- since the walls look more blue than grey in person I bought this one that has light blue, tan and grey in it! I got lucky! I am going to make a sign for over the bed, it will say “I have found the one my soul loves ” from Song of Solomon 3:4.  Not sure what it will look like but it will be a mixed media piece!  You can use your mixed media supplies on other surfaces…even your walls! You have to think out of the box!

Being thankful and family updates

7-IMG_0374

I love November. I love seeing all those posts that people share about being Thankful. We have much to be thankful for. I have made running lists in the past, sometimes daily posts about being thankful for the month of November but this year much of our time is consumed with many doctor visits and it is hard to keep up with everything that needs to be done.  If you have read my blog for any length of time you know that we have adopted three of our five kids and they have special needs. One of them seems to struggle more than the others and yes here we go again with this child, a new trial.  I call it a trial because the bottom line is I know God has this. This child has always overcome and I believe this is no different. The doctors have told us there is something wrong with his liver. Much testing and many doctors are involved – hence all the time spent at the doctors offices.  He has missed a lot of school, there have been weeks when we are at a lab or doctors’ office three out of five days! If his tests on the first week of December don’t look better, they will do a liver biopsy on him. Because my children have special needs and are adopted I never post their names online but God knows who he is so if you choose to say a prayer for my boy I would deeply appreciate it. I am confident that this child will yet again triumph over what was done to him in the womb.

I am sharing today my first bible journaling page – it took me a while to get over the idea of drawing in the bible,  I had to get a new bible specifically for this purpose. I think it’s a good thing, the whole time you spend creating,  you are meditating on that word. Since November is National Adoption Awareness Month  I picked out this scripture for that purpose. I am thankful for my family – it doesn’t matter how it comes together~ adoption, blended families, close friends that are just as much family as blood – family is family and I am blessed to have them in my life.  You should be thankful for family too!

Blessings!
Rita

And the stockings were hung…

December 2014 003-001100
Hey there creatives! Well I have lots of good news first my surgery went well, thank you for those who have been praying God is good and after all parts were removed I am happy to report there is no cancer! I am recovering, slowly but surely, I am very tired and although at times I think I am fine I realize later that I am quite slow and not myself. But I will get there. Hubby has done and excellent job taking care of me and the kids. I am thankful the recovery is not as painful as I thought it would be. And because of my physical limitations I am thankful I was able to get Christmas decorations done and cleaned up before my surgery. Not as much as I normally  do but  not too shabby considering the time crunch. Here are some photos…

Updates on whats going on

December 2014 002100
It is the busiest time of year and this house is no different – OK maybe a little different. While doing the “norm” decorating and such I feel extremely rushed and can’t even enjoy it. Why so rushed you say? Well a week and a half ago I found out I was scheduled for surgery tomorrow. If you read my previous posts (herehere and here) you know that I have been struggling with some health issues that I am praising God because all of tests were negative. However because of where the tumor is they have to remove it to be sure that it is benign. (That’s what I am believing) So being that Christmas is only weeks away I had to get things done in a week and a half that I thought I had a month to do!

December 2014 004100

Meanwhile my house looks like this…which is driving me nuts! I have to get this stuff out of here and get this cleaned up! I am tempted to leave it but I know my kids and hubby – they would just walk around it and go on about their business! LOL And after the surgery there will be no heavy lifting or bending for a while so I’ve gotta get this done!

At least my little helpers are at school so I can move quickly without interruptions.

And life goes on – as for the blog, I have scheduled several posts ahead of time in case I am not up to it so don’t stop coming by! I have a blog hop post this Thursday and there will be giveaways involved so you don’t want to miss those! I have a million things to do before tomorrow so I’d better get cracking!  Be blessed my friends and keep me in your prayers.

Blessings!

ramblings of mad woman

OCtober 2014 031

Hello my favorite peeps! I have been contemplating what to write and I am torn in so many directions? Lately I feel like I have ADD! Not joking my minds wanders in so many directions – I have DT projects to do, CHA Projects and demos to prepare, kids recitals, rehearsals and appts, my doc appt’s, meanwhile somebody is building something behind my house and the noise is so irritating, I should exercise, Thanksgiving is coming, oh! I have guests coming, yay Jeffrey! Why does that heater make that noise? Early release today, gotta get the kids, why does my blog keep getting spam comments?…ugh turn it off! I just want to sit and write a post. Do you see why I called this post ramblings of a mad woman?LOL

Shall I tell you about my crazy mad thoughts yesterday?
Well first I have to start by telling you I am blessed, when I take my little darlings to school I just drive up and they are so efficient they have helpers ready and waiting to receive them. Which is a good thing because back in the day it was not so simple. A few years back I had a hard time – the parking lot was so small it was easier to get out and walk them in, not to mention if it was winter that parking lot would be iced over so you had to park across the street and walk them around the parking lot to get them in there safely. Not to mention I could never understand how these moms looked so fabulous first thing in the morning – seriously, it was all I had to get them breakfast, lunches packed and out the door on time! I had no time to look fabulous! Which is why I love that now I don’t have to get out of my car. I know you think this girl has it together, all the time but really I am a hot mess – unless I have to be somewhere and look presentable (LOL).  I am a t shirt and jeans, or better yet shorts (oh yeah Cali girl) and tennis shoes kinda gal, you may even catch me rocking combat boots! So when it is really cold and all I am doing is driving them to school and back home, this girl is in her PJ’s  and a hoodie – (WHHHAAAT??) yeah that’s right a hot mess.

blog pic 5100

Don’t get me started on this crazy hair either. I have naturally curly hair and to have it short it has to be styled….ALL THE  TIME!  When I had long hair I would just throw it in a ponytail and if it was really bad a baseball hat. If I was feeling stylish I have my other beret caps and they looked great with my hair sticking out – in desperate times I could do two ponytails with a hat. I could  rock a hat. However with short hair it  is alot harder to rock a hat. It looks terrible – like I have no hair! (Lucky for me hubby doesn’t care !) Maybe I should try a beret and leave my bangs out …it’s not like I can brush it and go – it still looks like I have bed head unless I get some products out and actually style it! But I have not time, or maybe no desire. Who is going to see me anyways? The teacher opening the door? She already knows I  look crazy, I am the mom with purple blue and black hair! LOL!  So off I go every morning in PJ’s and hoodie, crazy hair and all.

Which leads me to yesterday.

There was an accident  on the HWY ( I have to pop on and off there for a few minutes to get home) and they have blocked all the lanes so we all have to get off the HWY. And of course like everyone else I am wondering whats going on.  I am seeing people drive over the grassy dip areas to get off the HWY – you know the ones the have really steep dips that you are not supposed to cross? Well this is Texas and people have their big trucks- it’s nothing to go stomping/4 wheeling right over something! And I am tempted but with my luck, I would get stuck…then somebody would have to help me…and I might even have to get out my car…and I would be wearing PJ’s… and have bed hair!!! And worse as big as it is here in TX, I am in the outskirts of Dallas, small town, it is very likely I could see somebody I know – or worse THEY COULD SEE ME! LOL! I am thinking I really need to get up earlier and get  dressed!  But today is another day and did I get dressed? Nope, I am sitting here in my PJ’s writing this post.

So thats it, a glimpse into and ordinary life, ramblings of a mad woman that creates art. Are you one of those fabulous people looking fabulous all the time? If so how do you it? I need to go create some, now, before those kids get out of school! Have a blessed day!

P.S. I am thankful today for wonderful ladies that lift me up in prayer! Just sayin 😉

Blessings!
Rita

Suffering, character and life in general

October 2014 162-1101
I have always heard that  suffering  and trials grow your character, last week I heard someone preach that sometimes God allows suffering because He is trying to show you who you are.

Wrap your head around that…

He already knows who you are but you need to know who you are. I never thought about it that way but I get it. Your character will show through (good or bad) by the way you respond/react to your trials/sufferings.

Miles McPherson explained it this way (my paraphrase as I was taking notes) It’s like when you have a tea bag with no label – you never know what you are going to get until it is  boiled.

Of course there is the old standby – He will never give you more than you can handle. I decided I will not ever say that to anyone suffering again. I know they mean well – and I believe it, I have said it myself (even to myself!). I have heard that so many times, especially recently  and I believe it, it’s just not very comforting.

The bottom line is that no matter what I will still trust God and continue to serve and live my life the best way possible. Yes, I still don’t know what outcome my current situation will be but I will not live in fear. I have good days (little pain and uncomfortable) and bad days (I wont go there), more tests are being done, slowing ruling out one thing or another.

October 2014 157-1101
It is really odd being on the other side of this- we have been through so much with all our kids and God has always come through I know He will get me through this too.  Meanwhile we live – life is as normal, my little ones don’t know know and until/unless there is something to know I won’t go there. Yesterday we went to the pumpkin patch – it is weirdly hot & bright here, in the 80’s! It was all we could do to get there take some pictures and get back home into air conditioning! LOL

This year we are doing a trunk or treat at our church – we have never participated in one because our church has never done one and we usually avoid halloween altogether because one of our kiddos was terrified  by all the costumes. But he has been doing great, he is older now and while he still has absolutely no desire to dress up he wants to participate in Trunk or Treat. (Yes we have a back up plan in case  he has a panic attack – and I mean that literally.) We are so proud of him for trying to conquer one of his fears!

So trunk or treat -there are so many ideas (hello Pinterest!) that I cant decide! I also want to do something different – but my favorite themes have all been done before. (Except Frozen but I bet lots of people will be doing that.) The top running ideas right now are Alice in wonderland (so many things you can do with this theme!), Charlie Brown – the great pumpkin (this would be so easy to put together) , or Peter Pan( Also I think could be easy). Do you have any ideas? I would love to hear them!   October 2014 221-1101
Here’s a little pumpkin for your inspiration!

My Ballerina Theater!

RBarakat.Deflecto2100
Hey there bloggers! I have this fun little project today, my ballerina theater! Baby girl was ecstatic when she saw this! (Being a little ballerina herself! The theater is actually a wood kit from Retro Cafe Art, of course painted and embellished by me. As well as adding  my little ballerina! I think I would like to do another -more of a marionette type I think! So fun! The curtains are flocked paper from DCWV – it was white, I died with Tulip dye sprays.

RBarakat.Deflecto1100
I thought you might want to see some insights on this project!  My ballerinas are held in place with these really cool super grip display holders from Deflecto Craft Solutions!

Oct 2014 039100
They have super strong adhesive so it’s perfect to give my ballerinas depth. For the ones in the back I cut two small papers and stuck it in the holder.

Oct 2014 040100
Then I folded then over and glued them to the backs of some of my ballerinas. (The ones one the sides I simply put their dresses in the holder and stuck them on the sides. )

RBarakat.Deflecto3100
I had lots of fun with embossing powders and Gelatos for the other surfaces.

RBarakat.Deflecto4100
I even used a little crackle medium here and there.

RBarakat.Deflecto5100
Here you can see the edges are actually ribbon. Such a fun project! I hope you enjoyed my ballerina theater!

In other news- I have no answers yet about my health but I am believing for the best outcome and staying positive!

blessings!
