DIY nightstand makeover!

Rita Barakat DIY nightstand makeover!
Hey creatives DIY nightstand makeover today!!  Super excited to share this second project from the Prime Publishing event I shared in my last post! When you see the finished project (above) it’s hard to imagine how it started but with a little help from some very cool products I was able to make a huge makeover check it out below…

Rita Barakat DIY nightstand makeover!
Here is the view from the top of the nightstand, you can see all the cracks and holes not to mention it’s pink which doesn’t go with anything in my house!  I  filled some holes, did LOTS of sanding and I used a swiffer to pick up all the dust! I was ready to do some serious DIY painting!

Rita Barakat DIY nightstand makeover!
Here is what the nightstand looked like before – most of it was in pretty good shape it just needed a little TLC. One of the legs was stripped so I used a little glue (Beacons quick grip)  to keep it in place. Once it was cleaned up, sanded , filled and glued I started to paint.

Rita Barakat DIY nightstand makeover!
I did not use a primer, I did use Plaid chalk paint and it covered beautifully! No primer needed!
(I hate the way  most primers smell!)

Rita Barakat DIY nightstand makeover!
I did the edging with Testors enamel paint – they look great together!

Rita Barakat DIY nightstand makeover!
The accent was my favorite part, I used a stencil for DCWV with a little repositionable glue and Deoc Art foil I got this  brilliant decorative shine (did I mention I love a little sparkle?).

Rita Barakat DIY nightstand makeover!
I like this look much better! And it goes perfectly with my room makeover (I will post those pictures on Friday!)
You will find this project on the Fave Crafts site here.
Stay tuned I have another post coming ASAP with my third and final project for Prime Media!
Please go vote for this or one of the other two previous projects I posted for this contest!

Steampunk in a box!

Steampunk in a Box!Rita Barakat
Good morning peeps! Steampunk in a box! This  is a new project I have to share with you,  I had so much fun with this project I couldn’t wait to share it with you! I loved taking different ideas, combining it together to make something very cool. I combined two themes I love to paint, steampunk and Alice in Wonderland. Note the eyes on my girl?  It just reminded me of Alice, the pocket watch theme is so prevalent in both themes. It also reminds me the time is fleeting…(but  I digress…)

Steampunk in a Box! Rita Barakat
So I made this box for the Prime Publishing Fave Crafts Best Blogger Crafts Idea book for 2016 and contest that will be published soon! You can see last years free ebook here. (I have a project in that one too.)  One of the really fun things about going to the CHA (Craft and Hobby Association) Mega show is the Prime Publishing  Blogger party were manufacturers and designers (me) get together and chat about how we can help each other. Then some of them send products for designers to try and  make projects for the idea book & contest! When they post the contest, people vote for their favorites – I will update as soon as they post it so keep checking in! You can vote here! Steampunk in a box is one of three that I submitted for the book! I will be sharing these projects all week!

When I see a  cool project I always want to know what they used to make it (not to mention I got some really cool products to use!) so I will share by each side of the Steampunk in a box! This  side I drew my girl and used Faber-Castell Design Memory Craft®  Gelatos® and PITT® Artist Pens for the girls face and clothes. (They were not a part of the Prime Publishing blogger party.) Her Glasses and necklace  were drawn in with a Gold metallic Enamel Paint Pen from Testors. Did you know they made those markers? They write over everything – even slick surfaces! I love that! I used that marker and gold DECO FOIL™ from Thermoweb on the wings to give it that gilded antiqued gold look! The  DECO FOIL™ is SO fun! It comes in every color imaginable! (You know I will be making fairy wings with the rainbow sheets!) All the chipboard pieces were covered this way – the chipboard pieces (SA Crafters LLC) were not a part of the party but  a perfect addition to this project! Pay close attention the background of the box- I was super excited to try this new Tint It spray paint from Design Master – first of all this color is gorgeous! Second it’s translucent so you can layer it to make it more opaque. I sprayed it over the  Permapaque pens from  Sakura and it looks fabulous (even better in person)! It doesn’t hide the natural patterns in the wood, it dried very quickly and still let me see clearly the design I drew with the pens. You probably knew about Sakura as they are the makers of your Gelly Pens but I had no idea they made so much more!  The Permapque pens are permanent so I wasn’t worried about them bleeding or smearing (I wrote on the wood box without sealing it and they did not bleed!). These pens write on any surface (even slick) and come in tons of colors! They come in different tip sizes and don’t bleed through paper (even Bible pages!) Lastly I put all these elements on this unfinished wooden box from Walnut Hallow . (This was not a part of the party but became the perfect venue for this magical Steampunk in a box! I love painting on wood and recently did a fairy on another piece on my previous post.)
Steampunk in a Box! Rita Barakat
You really see the guiding on the wings with this side view of the Steampunk in a box! I purposely did not cover them entirely to make it look aged.
Steampunk in a Box! Rita Barakat
Keeping with the theme here is the top & side view. Later in the week I will give a more detailed look at that steampunk shoe, it has so much detail, it deserves it’s own post!

Steampunk in a Box! Rita Barakat
A last look and close up for today – I used  a lot of different products and techniques a tutorial will appear in the ebook I will give you the link here when it’s published so don’t forget to check back! Remember to vote!  ALso make sure you sign up for my newsletter! I share a full class each month and give you the inside scoop to giveaways and other fun things!

CHA DIA display by Rita Barakat 2016

Hey there crafty peeps! Whew so I am finally back from CHA! I hope you were able to see my periscopes while I was there – not as many as I would like because of the sketchy wifi in the convention center but I got a few in and a couple of videos. So here is a clean video (the periscopes that did work were very grainy thanks to the wifi) of my Designer Display, if you were there I hope you were able to see it in action but if not you can look at it now. The display got a great response and I was soooo happy that it worked like I thought it would. (You never know with these things!) Thank you for all my sweet peeps that wished me well! XOXO I would also like to thank Faber-Castell Design Memory Craft®, DecoArts, Deflecto, DCWV and Beacon- all these companies provided wonderful products that went into my display and I am so honored to work with them! (Now if I could get a canvas and/or watercolor paper company to work with! )

Here are some pictures of me building my display -not the best pictures but you get the idea. 5-IMG_6945

I was so happy to see all my creative peeps and truly missed some that weren’t there. Next year it’s in AZ, should be interesting since I’ve only driven through there a couple of times.

If you were there I hope you got one of this years button, this is the third year I have done these buttons and I am super excited people actually came to find me to get one! On the left is this years apron – you know I cannot walk around wearing a plain apron! (Did you know that you can use PITT pens on fabric?) I spent a LOT of time working in the booth but I did get a little time to walk the floor – I will post those pictures this week so stay tuned!

I am so happy to share these pictures from the Texture Techniques class I taught at CHA…

You know I had to represent my Texas peeps by wearing my cowboy boots ya’ll! LOL
We had so much fun, everyone did a fantastic job!

Now that I am back and holidays and CHA are over it is back to business as usual – or the new usual, I will be kicking off a new DIY periscope series, adding more videos to my youtube channel and revamping my mixed media class newsletter. So if you aren’t following me please look me up.
As always the latest news will be on my FB page.

So the question of the day is what day and what time of day are you most likely to stop and watch a live video (periscope)? ((Please include your timezone!))

Happy crafting peeps!

CHA Paper Arts Blog Hop today!

may 2015 017-001

Good morning artsy peeps! I am super excited to share this sweet project I made for todays CHA Paper Arts Blog Hop! All week long several  CHA Designers will be working with different CHA Manufacturers to bring you lots of fun projects and tutorials! Oh and did I mention prizes? But I digress…
I was thrilled to find out I would be working with Bo Bunny! As soon as I saw these beautiful Juliet papers I was inspired to make this mixed media little girl. She stand almost 18 inches and is covered in the various paper designs from the Juliet Collection by BoBunny!

To make this project I drew my girl, traced it onto various patterned papers and foam core board, cut them out and glued the pieces back together! Here are some details;

may 2015 019-001

To create her skin and hair I used gesso and various Gelatos® Colors to paint her features on the polka dot paper collection from BoBunny. The sweet flower in her hair is also BoBunny! Easily attached with a little Gel Medium.

may 2015 020-001

Of course I added this little bunny in honor of the Bo Bunny name! Tip*to make pieces pop, make sure you ink the edges! Did you notice the little pocket? I added a little pearl flourish! (Also Bo Bunny).

may 2015 015-001
Did you notice her sparkly ruby red shoes? The paper is from a Juliet 6×6 paper pad – same paper as her dress just a little smaller. Then I topped it of with a little Bo Bunny glitter paste – the color is blush and although it’s pink it really shines on top of red!

may 2015 021-001
And last but not least I made her sweet little slip with a few Bo Bunny doilies cut in half! I hope you enjoyed my project today!

A canvas mixed media mini and giveaway!

Hi there peeps today I am sharing a Canvas Corp 6×6 Canvas Stitched Mini I decorated with a few of my girls and Faber-Castell Design Memory Craft®. I had so many pictures I made a little video of the finished mini portfolio below but here is the cover! And a few tips and tricks!

  r2 r3
I wanted to use some of the girls I had painted before so I decided to use  this Transfer Artist paper! It was so easy to use, I printed my images the paper (as per instructions) ironed it onto my canvas…

r4 r5-001
And peeled the backing to reveal the transfer! It worked in black and white and color! Now you know I couldn’t leave it like that, I had to do more embellishing!
Here is my finished project…

For more techniques and tips go see my post on the Faber-Castell Design Memory Craft® blog!

To enter to win go to  Faber-Castell Design Memory Craft® blog and leave a comment (they are giving away  a $50 prize)!
One random winner will be selected on April 20th. Good luck!

And if you are going to CHA/Namta in Denver come see me in booth 701! I will be painting, painting, painting in the booth for the next four days!

My first Ustream

Hey hey there artsy peeps! Well if you missed my live mixed media canvas class  you can still watch it here: !
That was my first Ustream and I had some technical issues but once I got going I think it went OK. It is VERY different than shooting videos! I am so glad I had some helpers to answer questions because they were chatting so fast there is no way I could have done both and kept up! I had my buddy Lisa Adamentz  help me afterwards and I think we got it all figure out for next months Ustream! I hope you will be back for that one! I do love sharing information – I think we all learn from each other, I love watching others as well – I always learn something! I hope you learn something form my Ustream.

This project was inspired from a song called Thrive from Casting Crowns – Last year was rough medically for our family so I am happy for a new year to start and I am hoping not only to have a healthy 2015 but a year where we thrive!

Back from CHA I was super excited to share the new products from Faber-Castell Design Memory Craft – the Texture Luxe is fantastic!
These are not in the stores yet but keep a lookout! (if all goes well expect to see them in March!)
One of the things I forgot to share on the Ustream is that Gelatos now come in new transparent barrels AND there are new colors (including pastels!) making a total of 52 different colors! I don’t have those yet but just like you, I can’t wait to play with the new colors. So here are some close ups of what was new for CHA from Faber-Castell Design Memory Craft:

I shared some of these on the Ustream, I know you are going to love these new products! Whats on your “must have” list?
