How to make skin tones with colored pencils

Hey Creatives! Todays video is showing how to make skin tones with colored pencils! It is is the third video in this series (see the previous post if you missed the first two!) using colored pencils to shade and create beautifully colored faces! I am so pleased on how she turned out – you know me, I am a mixed media guru but every once in awhile it’s good to go back to basics or simply give yourself limits and watch those creative juices flow! Have you ever tried limiting yourself? I have also tried limiting myself to five items on a scrapbook page, only three colors, work with colors that aren’t my normal and on and on. It’s a great way to challenge yourself!

I am so excited for you to watch this video!! Make sure you watch all the way until the end- there is a cool surprize there!

You can make art!

IMG_0135 Today I have a quick video for ya! A little work in progress! Have you every had a quote or scripture jump out at you and you wanted to remember it? ¬†An easy way to do that is paint it! As soon as I read this, I knew this was the picture I wanted to paint. Now I know what you’re thinking, what if I can’t draw? or what if I hate my handwriting? No excuses! You can make art! Here are three alternatives to what I have done below.

I used various ¬†watercolor mediums, the “crayons” are actually Neocolors in Chestnut and Flesh. The heart was painted with a Daniel Smith Extra Fine Watercolor Stick in Permanent Alizarin Crimson. I am painting on mixed- media paper from Strathmore.
But you can use whatever medium you have.  I drew my picture but you could find a stamp or stencil that would work. Or even find a a picture in a magazine and collage it!

Don’t like your handwriting? I used an app – Adobe Spark app on my iphone for the lettering! Another idea would be to use alphas and stick them on or type it up on your computer, print it and paste it into place! You can do this!

I hope this inspires you to do your own painting! I promise you can make art!

In other news I want to make sure you are watching me on Facebook Monday nights! ¬†If you haven’t I am doing Mixed Media Mondays is where I do some type of tutorial, project, tip around Mixed-Media. The exciting part is that I have some fun sponsors lined up to give away prizes! The very first giveaway is from Activa! Check out their website¬†¬†and meet me of FB Monday nights!

Avoid these 3 common mistakes most beginning artists make!

3 common mistakes most artists make

You’ve spent times pouring over you latest masterpiece, ¬†you think you are finished but something is not quite right…How do you fix it? Here are five common mistakes that most artist make and how to fix it!

3 common mistakes most artists make

Mistake 1: Using the wrong paper, starting off with the right type of paper is so important for good results. I wasn’t paying attention and I used a paper form my drawing pad instead of watercolor or mixed media paper. When you paint on drawing paper it makes the paper warp and if you are using a lot of water or heavy mediums you can make the paper start to pill or worse you could make a hole in the paper! Yes you can gesso it first, and that is what I did once I realized it was the wrong type of paper (of course I had to do it¬†in front of a live audience! ha!) and it helps, but it’s not enough. It also is not meant to take paint – so you don’t get even coverage. Most drawing paper is a lot thinner than watercolor or mixed media paper. I like a lot of layers of paint, textures, blending directly on the project, so the paper gets very wet with all these mediums.

'If you are going to abuse your paper you had better make sure it's strong enough to handle it!' quote='If you are going to abuse your paper you had better make sure it's strong enough to handle it! Click To Tweet“(giggle)

*Solution: the right paper – I prefer at least 90lbs watercolor, mixed media or bristol paper. (Most watercolor has texture I like it, some prefer smooth especially for faces which is when I reach for the bristol.)

Mistake 2 : Scale and proportion: Often times I (especially when doing videos) I forget to take a step back a look at my piece perpendicular to me. Let me explain, most of us are drawing, painting on a flat surface (a desk or table). It is easy for the proportions to be skewed from this point of view. Which is why many artists use an easel.

*Solution? You could use and easel. Or simply stop every once in awhile and hold that picture up Р look at it for balance. Especially for faces Рour eyes naturally look for balance. Had I stopped and looked I would have noticed one eye is slightly larger than the other, Can you see it? I also have an issue with the eyebrows РI prefer that they be more similar.

3 common mistakes most artists make

Mistake 3 : You know something is wrong maybe It’s in the details…because I blog, do videos, post on social media I take pictures of all my work. Nowadays everyone has a camera on their phone. You can take a picture blow it up and look at it up close! There are small details you can live with – for example I don’t mind that the eyebrow is not perfect because when I look at the overall picture is not noticeable. However when I looked at it close up I didn’t like some things- I had more white dot highlights and it just felt like too much. I decided to take it back a notch and simply grabbed a marker and went over some of those areas. When I stepped back it looked much better without them. If you look in whole photo above, you can see a little red mark on her neck where the hair color bled. I only noticed it when I did the close ups, an easy fix if you catch it. two suggestion when using watercolor: Get a wet paint brush and work it in (BLEND) or lift it off. Use a clean wet paint brush, “paint” the are to be removed and wipe the paint onto a towel, repeat until the paint is gone or blended in. If you are using acrylics get your gesso, cover it up and paint again.

If you watch my videos you have heard me say this so many times…

'Gesso is your friend!'Click To Tweet

There have been times (when I have rushed) I even forgot to paint something, in my classes the most common mistakes I see when doing faces is they forget eyebrows and/or eyelashes. When you look at  your picture in pieces you will find those mistakes.

*Solution: Take a close up. take a picture up close, (you don’t have to print it) just look at it on your camera; you can see things you didn’t even know were wrong! Make sure the pieces are all painted, fix mistakes and all body parts are present! lol

(This project is on my latest periscope called “hey let’s do something creative, are you with me?” Most of the paints are from Daniel Smith. That fantastic color I got on her hair is by using Daniel Smith Gold grounds first then adding red watercolor on top!)

We all make mistakes as artists, even those of us who have been doing this a long time so slow down, try these tips and see if your work doesn’t improve! Do you have any tips? I would love to hear them, leave them in the comments below!

Making faces, drawing eyes

Rita Barakat Fairy Eyes
The eyes are the window to the soul… You’ve heard it a thousand times right? Well it’s true in art as well. There is something about a painting that draws you in…color, composition and something significant about it…If it is a portrait type (making faces) it very well could be the eyes. So it’s very important we focus on doing a great ¬†job on the eyes when we are making our faces. When making my faces, they are more whimsical; I want to take the real and make it light, sweet, innocent and fun. So it is ok to exaggerate features, break some rules for making faces and create fun little surprises like glitter in their eyes, or star tattoos to accentuate the eyes!

Rita Barakat Girl Eyes
This girl has metallic copper eyes and hair’ I love the gorgeous color and texture! (I used copper Texture Luxe) But important to note, the basic eye shape is there. I love the way Jane Davenport does her girl eyes; they are exaggerated but still beautiful and whimsical. The eyes don’t have to be perfect (nobody is) but if they are not very close in size and placement to each other they quickly become the focus (in a bad way). Also if they are missing any basic elements – eyelids, eyelashes, pupils, light (white) and eyebrows (the ultimate accessory to the eyes- and PLEASE do draw hairs not one¬†continuous¬†line) -they look very odd.

Rita Barakat Mermaid eyes
Don’t be afraid to experiment with color, who says eye color only come in browns, blacks, blues and greens? Who says hair color in shades of brunettes, reds and blondes? Art should be fun and freeing, my art has no limits except my imagination; Yours too! So have fun with it and practice, practice, practice eyes if you are making faces!
Are you making faces? If so I would love to take a look at your work can you leave me a link?

*If you are in Texas and would like to learn more about making faces make sure you sign up for my ¬†IRL(in real life) class “so you say you can’t draw” class ¬†at the GASC show in Arlington June 16,17,18!

Art journal page and thoughts for today, love heals…

Rita Barakat Art Journal Love Heals
Love heals…How do you know when God is talking to you? He has never come to me ¬†in a burning ¬†bush or audibly. For me it is the simple nudging of the Holy Spirit – or sometimes when I am tuning in to broadcasts over different media or devotional time and all of them have the similar messages that come to the same point, for me ¬†it’s an “aha ” moment”- God is trying to tell me something. And this is a good thing because I am not always quick to listen! ¬†I have to remember to tune in because life is hard and you can quickly find yourself feeling alone in your struggles, but we are not alone. God loves us and His love heals what hurt divides.
Rita Barakat Art Journal Love Heals
Lately I feel like He has been talking to me about how I am using my talents, being who God made me to be and not allowing condemnation to enter in. It would be easy to quit and concentrate on my problems. You are thinking What you have problems?”
yes, ¬†I know I am the happy upbeat girl always ready to greet you with a smile and yes, I have problems, we all have problems. I can admit I am not always able to keep it together. Those who have been reading my blog for a while know that my mother with Alzheimer’s & dementia . I won’t get into that now, (that could take up a few posts by itself) but I am taking care of her needs in spite of my upbringing. Not to say poor me, but because it’s the right thing to do. ¬†It would be easier to say it’s not my problem, but that is not who I am. In spite of who she was, she is a human being and I would want someone to make sure my needs were being met and not being taken advantage of ¬†if I was incapacitated. It wasn’t easy at first but for the moments of lucidity, I have been able to see another side of her I would never had seen had I not stepped in and started taking care of her needs.
Love heals…
Rita Barakat Art Journal Love Heals
I am a mother of three children with special needs (5 total) and let me tell you this year has been a roller coaster of emotions between medical and behavioral needs. I am blessed to be able to work from home because I can control my hours and my schedule is flexible; it has to be, things happen quickly – if I were at a job elsewhere it would cause me to leave all the time for emergencies or to not go in at all, I would be let go for sure.

Rita Barakat Art Journal Love Heals
But God. I love those words. But God is so amazing that He would give me a talent that I can use  from home, create an income and love what I do. I love to create, scrapbooking helped me to focus on the things that were going right with each child, art  helps me relax and not stress. I would be a basket case if I just concentrated on the things that are wrong or could go wrong.

Rita Barakat Art Journal Love Heals

He is faithful. I don’t believe or care for that saying “He never gives you more than you can handle”. That’s not true- He does give you more than you can handle because ¬†He can handle it. I don’t know how people can do it without Him, I can’t. He always gives ¬†me what I need to endure whatever is going on. In all of this I am also the worship leader at our church and I can’t tell you how many times the enemy has whispered, “you lost it today with the kids – you shouldn’t be worshiping, much less leading anything.” ¬†Or ¬†“see you are too busy that’s why your kid is falling apart.” Lies. My kid is falling apart because of the drugs his bio mother took while she was pregnant and he is in the best possible scenario to grow up healthy (also another ¬†post for another day). Love heals. Considering all their challenges and background my kids are doing remarkably well.

Rita Barakat Art Journal Love Heals
The word tells me in Romans 8:1, There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. Jesus doesn’t condemn us, the Holy Spirit does not condemn us, God does not condemn us, He sees us as His children. He loves us and corrects us but does not condemn us. When our children do something wrong we must correct them, but we don’t stop loving them. Love heals and keeps us together.

Rita Barakat Art Journal Love Heals
They may disappoint, frustrate and make us angry but it doesn’t change our love for them. We can still take joy in them today even if they made us angry or let us down today. Love heals…Romans 8:38 says “And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow–not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love.”¬†And so it is with God’s love – you can’t disappoint Him enough for Him not to love you, use you or disown you. His love covers all…¬†And you will mess up – we all do (Romans 3:23¬†For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;) but¬†nowhere¬†in the bible does it say quit or give up – it says persevere! Pick up sword! Lift up your heads! Ok that’s a lesson for another day…

The point is if you are feeling condemnation it is not from God and you don’t have to receive it. And believe me – I have to remind myself all the time because the enemy does not want you to succeed. He want’s to tear you down – don’t let Him. You can do all things through Christ who strengthens you! (paraphrased – Phil 4:13) He loves you and His love heals all things that can make you feel separated from Him.

Just a little encouragement for today my friends, no matter where you are or what you are doing God has this covered. Just sayin’.
