Turning the tables on crazy blog rules

Happy December creatives! It’s been a while I know and a first for me, in years of blogging as a designer! I did not blog one day in November – turning the tables and breaking all the “rules” of blogging! I have always heard blogging more often is better, I even tried blogging daily for a while but it was driving me crazy trying to keep up! I went to three times a week but between that and all the design teams I was on, it was taking up so much time it was more than a full-time job! (Did I mention I have a family?) I knew it was time to step back, reflect and reevaluate. I stepped down from all teams, took a break from blogging and made the decision to really figure out and focus on what I wanted to do.

I don’t think a lot of people realize how much time goes into a blog post: creating something for the post, taking pictures, editing pictures, typing up content that would be interesting to someone else. In between sharing products, coming up with tutorials and videos – oh man, the videos! (Make the project, remake the project while shooting the video, editing the video, formatting, uploading, coming up with descriptions, then sharing on social media!) I am tired just thinking about it all!

I had to refocus – I love sharing, teaching artsy things. Turns out I love doing live stream – Periscope and Facebook Live has allowed me to get comfortable in front of the camera and because it’s recorded live there is no editing! Yay! (Now if I can find an easy way to upload them directly to YouTube that would be AWESOME!

I needed to free up the time to work on more art that I could use for licensing and the timing turned out to be perfect. (Um yes there are exciting things coming soon!) I did miss blogging and design teams but I need to remember that It has to be on my terms, to fit my family needs and allow me more time to do artwork.

After all this little pumpkin doesn’t care about my deadlines! Just sayin’!
So I am back, with a new game plan and I am very happy to be working with Therm O Web for 2017!
I decided I will blog once a week – I can commit to that, I will post on Thursdays,
maybe a challenge for you to do something artsy over the weekend?

And although I will only blog once a week you can catch me on Facebook, live on Monday nights 8 pm CST. Periscope has been is a little harder for me to commit to, several times a week is hard with a big family but I do post on Instagram, Twitter and FB at least a half an hour before going live. My newsletter is still growing so you can sign up for that – I usually only send out one newsletter a month with a free top-secret mixed media class just for you!

I feel like this a good place to be now after the break and I hope you will check in as there will be lots of artsy fun still going on!
It’s good to stop every once in a while and reevaluate what you are doing. I also think it’s OK to turn the tables on the crazy blog rules out there and do what works best for you! (Besides it’s always changing!)

What do you think? Could it be time for you to do some reevaluation? Is it time to clean up your blogging schedule? Are you doing things because you want to or because you feel like everybody else expects you to? Leave me a comment and share if you feel like this would be of value to someone else.

P.S. The artwork on this post was done live on FB and Periscope, you can go back and watch these!

  1. You are so right, Rita. We all need to do what is right for us, our families, & the call which God has placed on our lives. That doesn’t look the same for everyone. So glad you have a fresh strategy. Be blessed. 🙏

  2. I agree Rita. I have a blog about my journey with my mom & her Alzheimers. I haven’t posted in a few months but I post when I receive my message from God. I’m just about to post another one this weekend because I know what HE wants me to write about. I don’t have anyone following me….(yet) but I started the blog so I could “remember” my journey with her and for my family that doesn’t live here to know what’s going on.

    1. That’s really smart Kellie! SO sorry about your mom, my mom has it too, so did my grandmother. I don’t feel courageous enough to share those stories, it’s been quite a rollercoaster! I would love to read it please leave me a link!

Thank you for leaving your sweet comments, I love to hear what you have to say!
